What to Expect on Sundays

Frequently Asked Questions

What time do I show up and where?
Our regular worship service time is every Sunday at 10:30 am. Our building is located at 209 West Broadway, Decorah IA.
Where do I park? What door should I use?

Parking is available along Broadway and Court streets.  Reserved handicap accessible parking is available near both entrances to the building.

There are two entrances to the building.

One entrance is on the corner of Court and Broadway atop a set of stairs.  Use that entrance for access to the sanctuary and fellowship room.

The other entrance is located approximately at the midpoint on the city block, under the covered entrance.  Use that entrance for the Congregational Center and for access to the sanctuary and fellowship room via elevator or stairs.

What should I wear?
You will find folks wearing anything from shorts and jeans to suits.  Wear what makes you comfortable and dress as who you are. After all, members of our congregation come from all walks of life.
Are children welcome?
We value kiddos and youth, so by all means, they are welcome! Children of all ages are welcome to be in worship or, if their adults would like, nursery care is available. Part of the way through worship, our younger kiddos have the option of going to children’s church for activities, songs and fun.
Will I have to introduce myself?
You can expect a warm greeting from members of the congregation, but don’t worry! You will not be asked to stand up and introduce yourself or pointed out as someone here for the first time.
What happens during a usual worship service?
You’ll receive a printed bulletin (like a guide for the service) when you come into the sanctuary.  It will have the plan for that Sunday’s worship, which will include a mixture of prayer, song, scripture readings, a reflection, and a chance for folks to share celebrations and prayer requests with the congregation. Additionally, at least once a month, Holy Communion is offered, usually on the first Sunday.
How long is a worship service?
Worship usually lasts about an hour.  We gather for coffee and snacks following worship.  If you are able to stay, it is a good time to get to know folks a little bit.
Do I have to sing?
We encourage everyone to join their voices in song when we gather for worship, but singing is not mandatory, and some folks read along rather than sing.
Do I have to fill out the visitor’s slip?
If you are comfortable, the slip of paper we ask visitors to fill out allows us to send you a card in the mail or an email later in the week.  If you would like to receive our newsletter, you can let us know that on the slip too.  After you’ve been to church a few times, Pastor Laura will use the information on the visitor’s slip to invite you to coffee in hopes to get to know you better but there is no pressure to accept the invitation.
Do I have to put money in the offering plate?
You don’t have to give anything. The offering is a chance to give financially so that ministry inside and outside of the church can happen. Think of it like fuel for a car.  If you choose to share a gift, it will be used for the ministry or outreach of the Church.
Do I have to be a church member to take communion?
All are welcome to take communion. You don’t have to be a member of Decorah UCC or the United Church of Christ to partake.  Everyone, everyone, everyone is welcome.
