What to Expect on Sundays
Some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What time do I show up and where?
Our regular worship service time is every Sunday at 10:30 AM. Our building is located at 209 West Broadway St, Decorah IA.
Where do I park? Which door should I use?
Parking is available along Broadway and Court Streets. Reserved accessible parking is available near both entrances to the building. There are two entrances to the building. One entrance is on the corner of Court and Broadway atop a set of stairs. Use that entrance for access to the sanctuary and fellowship room. The other entrance is located approximately at the midpoint on the city block, under the covered entrance. Use that entrance for the Congregational Center and for access to the sanctuary and fellowship room via elevator or stairs.
What should I wear?
You will find folks wearing anything from shorts and jeans to suits. Wear what makes you comfortable and dress as who you are. After all, members of our congregation come from all walks of life.
Are children welcome?
We see children and young people as central to the life of our congregation, so by all means, they are welcome!
Children in pre-K through grade 5 (and any adults who are interested in joining their kiddos) are invited to join for Pray & Play—a wonder-filled faith formation time during the second half of worship. Click here for more info.
Children of all ages are welcome to remain in worship with their families. There is a cozy, child-friendly space in the front row on the righthand side of the sanctuary (if facing the altar). There, on the rug, you’ll find space for your child to spread out and play with some age-appropriate toys (no chokeables). You’re welcome to use this space at any time. Mothers are welcome to nurse anywhere that works for you and your child. And activity packets are available at the entrance to the sanctuary—with plenty of stuff to keep occupied anyone who likes to keep their hands busy!
Will I have to introduce myself?
What happens during a usual worship service?
You’ll receive a printed bulletin (like a guide for the service) when you come into the sanctuary. It will have the plan for that Sunday’s worship, which will include a mixture of prayer, song, scripture readings, a reflection, and a chance for folks to share celebrations and prayer requests with the congregation. Additionally, at least once a month, Holy Communion is offered, usually on the first Sunday.
How long is a worship service?
Worship usually lasts about an hour. We gather for coffee and snacks following worship. If you are able to stay, it is a good time to get to know folks a little bit.
Do I have to sing?
Do I have to fill out a CONNECT Card?
If you are comfortable, the CONNECT Card we ask visitors to fill out allows us to send you a note in the mail or an email later in the week. If you would like to receive our newsletter, you can let us know that on the Card, too.
Do I have to put money in the offering plate?
You don’t have to give anything. The offering is a chance to give financially so that ministry inside and outside of the church can happen. Think of it like fuel for a car. If you choose to share a gift, it will be used for the ministry or outreach of the congregation.
Do I have to be a church member to take communion?
All are welcome to take communion. You don’t have to be a member of Decorah UCC or the United Church of Christ to partake. Everyone, everyone, everyone is welcome!
